For the first time ever, Keswick Mountain Festival is proud to be able to offer exciting and adventurous activities that have been specifically designed for people with physical, sensory and/or learning disabilities. We are teaming up with The Lake District Calvert Trust to make sure that climbing, abseiling, canoeing and sailing are now accessible to all at the Keswick Mountain Festival!
The Festival welcomes The Lake District Calvert Trust to its programme this year. Pioneers in the provision of outdoor activities for those with disabilities, the Trust will be running two exciting full-day courses that will cover aspects of rock, rope and water sports. For the climbing day, participants will be taught the basic rope and safety work necessary for climbing and abseiling in a purpose-built and specially adapted indoor climbing arena at Calvert, before progressing out into the hills and trying their skills on the real thing! For the water activity day, participants will be introduced to a wide variety of canoes and sailing craft before heading out onto the beautiful lakes of the Lake District.
The Lake District Calvert Trust is AALS licensed and is a recognised RYA, BCU, and MLTE training Centre. No disability is too severe for them to manage in their pursuit of pushing the boundaries of activities that can be undertaken by people with disabilities. As Chief Instructor, Aidie Jones says ‘we have abseiled down the Bowderstone with a quadriplegic visitor who was also on a ventilator – so we are confident that we can give disabled visitors to the Keswick Mountain Festival the same wonderful outdoor experiences as those who are non-disabled enjoy.’
