Category: Hike

The Route:
A great chance to watch the sunset from the summit of Great Gable, one of the best summit views in the Lake District.

From Honister Pass we will climb to the Drum House along the remains of an old tramline that climbs the steep hillside above the slate mines, from here we turn onto Moses Trod, an old smugglers path that skirts around the fellside below Brandreth and Green Gable to Beck Head, the pass between Ennerdale and Wasdale. From Beck head a steep rocky scramble brings us up to the summit of Great Gable, one of the best summits and views in the Lake District. The sun will set across the Ennerdale Valley. From Great Gable we follow the ridge north, crossing Green Gable before descending back to the Moses Trod path back to Honister Pass.

Where to Meet:
From Keswick: Leave on the Borrowdale Road (from the mini roundabout near the co-op). Follow this road for approx 8 miles, passing through Rosthwaite and Seatoller. After Seatoller the road climbs steeply towards Honister Pass, continue on this road to the top of the pass where a National Trust pay and display car park will be seen to the left (behind the Youth Hostel) or the Honister Slate Mine car park is also pay and display. We will meet outside the entrance to the Slate Mines.
