Beginners Map Reading


 

Target Group: Beginner level with little prior knowledge.
Aims:
To introduce map reading and improve basic knowledge.
Layout:
An overview of the history of paper mapping produced by Ordnance Survey commences
this presentation followed by an understanding of maps, the layout and legend used by
Ordnance Survey. A brief description of the scales and user groups for each map sheet
before identifying the most useful map for walkers. Introduce the National Grid System by
use of a journey around the map board to identify symbols at certain locations.
Recap on map scale and use of the linear scale on the base of the map and introduce
measuring distance by use of string and the compass scales. Explain why we measure
distance and with some practical examples check distance and direction of travel on a
short journey. Finally, for safe day walk,
