Map Reading with Compass


 

Target Group: Able to map read with little prior knowledge of compass use.
Aims:
To introduce the compass and travel on bearings.
Layout:
Some history of the compass followed by cardinal points and a journey around the
essential compass parts. Introduction to the relationship of the “Norths” and how to adjust
magnetic variation for travel.
Introduction on how to take bearings from the map and practice each procedure on one or
two example “legs”. Discuss the need to orientate self, compass and map for use of travel.
Into a straightforward journey off track in mountain terrain to confirm learnings.
