Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre logo

Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre - documenting Cumbria’s Wildlife for over 100 years.

Over 1,000 wildlife enthusiasts tell CBDC what they have seen in Cumbria each year.  Their information is added to a database of 2.2 million records.  By analysing and mapping data CBDC can show whether a plant or animal population is increasing or decreasing and predict where to look for rare and important wildlife.  The data is also helping us to see the impact of human activities and climate change on Cumbria’s wildlife.  CBDC is a based in Tullie House Museum Carlisle.

Cumbria Biodiversity Centre will be taking visitors on 20-30 minute walks just beyond the Festival Village. These engaging walks will be led by expert guides and will provide information about iconic Lakeland species in their natural habitats. Whilst actual sightings of osprey, otter, pied flycatcher, barn owl, dragonflies, butterflies and moths will be rare in the middle of the day, these talks will equip you for your own walks in more ideal conditions.

RESTUBE logo

RESTUBE – the all-new little pack with BIG buoyancy!

Designed by Christopher Furhop following a Kitesurfing incident where he found himself in a potentially life threatening situation; separated from his equipment, out to sea and with little buoyancy. Being an Engineer, Christopher designed and launched RESTUBE to help save lives in sports activities where a buoyancy aid or lifejacket would reduce freedom to move.

Restube is designed to be small and lightweight to cater for active people who don’t want to feel restrained in the water.  The pack is worn around your waist, causes little or no drag and is perfect for Open Water Swimming, Windsurfing, Stand Up Paddleboard, Kitesurfing, On-Board boats, Angling and Lifeguards.

So far RESTUBE has been used at over 40 water sports events around the world, helping safety crews and participants alike.

RESTUBE has helped save over 20 lives since launch and has been adopted by divisions of the SLRG (Swiss lifeguards), Divisions of the Wasserwacht (German Red Cross – Water Safety & Rescue) and DLRG (German Lifesaving Association). Restube is currently being used and tested by Lifeguard associations around the world.

RSPB logo

Nature is in big trouble, but we've got big plans to save it.

Reserves are at the heart of what we do. They're vital to our conservation work and priceless spaces for everyone to get close to nature. We believe that they work best when they connect with wild spaces and habitats in the wider landscape. Species numbers have declined dramatically in recent years and it's vital that we work together to help their recovery. We'll continue to focus on our priority list of species and help nurture their recovery, through a combination of research, partnerships, landscape-scale conservation and policy work.

We have over 13,000 fantastic volunteers and they come from all walks of life. Our volunteering roles can be tailored to your skills, interests and circumstances.

You can volunteer from; your home, in your local community, at our reserves/offices or abroad. You can give as much or as little time as you like. Any time you can spare will be hugely appreciated and will help our vital work for birds, other wildlife and the environment.

During an internship with us, you can volunteer on a project or specialist piece of work. Our placements last for three, six, nine or 12 months.

Saxx Underwear Co logo

Originality often times means being first and SAXX’s heritage of revolutionizing underwear goes back 10 years. In 2006, Trent Kitsch was on a fishing expedition and after spending hours in a cold, clammy ocean suit he knew there had to be a better way to protect his package from chafing. A former baseball player, he imagined a catcher’s mitt hammock design and turned it upside down in his mind. After the fishing trip, and with the hammock idea still percolating, he worked with a seamstress and designer — and himself as the fit model — to create a paneled fabric hammock that separated his balls from his legs. Fourteen prototypes later, the BallPark Pouch™ and SAXX Underwear were ready for action.

Timothy Taylor’s logo

Timothy Taylor’s is an independent, family owned brewery based on the Knowle Spring in Keighley. We have over 150 years of brewing experience and are renowned for the quality of our award-winning beer. Our cask conditioned beers consist of Landlord, Boltmaker, Golden Best, Dark Mild, Ram Tam and we have recently launched Knowle Spring Blonde .

We can’t put the unique taste of Timothy Taylor’s beer down to any single thing. It’s the result of years of hard work, skill and doing things the hard way because we think it makes the difference.

Taking extra time, care and pride in traditional, hands-on brewing, and making no compromises when it comes to ingredients. Our 5 highly trained brewers still brew all our beer by hand and taste test every batch at least three times. Our Knowle Spring brewery sits on a natural artesian well, which provides a constant water, unique to Taylor’s, that has been filtered through layers of limestone and black rock. Knowle Spring water is naturally soft and very pure.

Its consistency is one of the reasons we are able to produce beers of such reliable quality and flavour. We only use Golden Promise barley. It’s the highest-grade barley you can use for brewing beer.

We’re one of the last brewers in Britain to still use whole leaf hops. They cost more and take more looking after but we think they’re vital to the flavour of our beer. Our unique strain of yeast is over 1800 generations old and combines perfectly with our water and barley. It’s appropriately called Taylor’s Taste.

It’s quite rare these days, but we still use a hop-back stage. This allows us to extract the most subtle flavours and aromas from the oils of the hops.

All for that taste of Taylor’s.
